Mayfair – top of the Monopoly board for a reason

Astute’s geographic reach from our Mayfair office extends throughout Mayfair, St James’ and Marylebone. With its grand mansions, magnificent apartments and prime buildings, including Crew House on Curzon Street or Dudley House on Park Lane, Mayfair is one of the capital’s most exclusive property destinations.

Situated within the City of Westminster, Mayfair is roughly bordered by Hyde Park to the west, Oxford Street to the north, Piccadilly and Green Park to the south and Regent Street to the east. Most of the area was first developed between the mid 17th century and the mid 18th century as a fashionable residential district, by a number of landlords, the most important of them the Grosvenor family. The Rothschild family bought up large areas of Mayfair in the 19th century. The freehold of a large section of Mayfair also belongs to the Crown Estate.

For 300 years, this grid of wide 18th-century streets west of Regent Street and edged by Green Park and Hyde Park has attracted princes, dukes, ambassadors and the internationally wealthy to its sophisticated heart. Both Prince Charles and the American ambassador call Mayfair or St James’ home.

The name Mayfair was derived from the annual fair in May that was introduced to the area in 1686. Today, Mayfair boasts a vibrant retail mix with the capital’s most exclusive shops, hotels, restaurants and clubs. Just alongside Burlington House is one of London’s most luxurious shopping areas, the Burlington Arcade, which has housed shops under its glass-roofed promenade since 1819. Mayfair’s list of exclusive Michelin-starred restaurants entertain royalty, private equity directors, ambassadors and a regular clutch of visiting movie stars.
