Fitzrovia – the wealth of Marylebone, the edginess of Soho and the grandeur of Bloomsbury

Although not officially a location within London, the area of Fitzrovia blends into the wealth of Marylebone one side, the edgy Soho to another and the grandeur of Bloomsbury. The area is said to be named after the Fitzroy Tavern, a gathering place for writers and other talented individuals in the 1930’s.

At its height, Fitzrovia was home to artists such as Sir Charles Eastlake, politicians such as prime minister Lord Salisbury and literary people including George Bernard Shaw. Aftter suffering a decline in the 20th century, the area is getting some attention from developers and celebrities alike.

The wide meandering streets are lined with tall Victoria brick buildings and a variety of other styles from eighteenth century houses to modern apartments. The architectural magnificent Fitzroy Square has seen many houses fully restored into high end family homes.

Charlotte Street is noted for its eclectic mix of restaurants and pubs and Tottenham Court Road is the major shopping street, and the best place in London to look for home furnishings and electronic goods. One of London’s tallest and most iconic buildings, the BT Tower, stands at the centre of Fitzrovia and the famous revolving restaurant at the top is planned to be reopened in time for the Olympics.

The area is also set to benefit from the redevelopment of the old Middlesex Hospital site into retail, office space and apartments.
